Selling subscriptions at the till
How to start a subscription for a customer at the counter – on the card reader with a signature, or with an SMS link or QR code the customer completes on their own phone.
You can start a subscription for a customer straight from the till. The till helps you pick the subscription product, register the customer and collect consent to automatic renewal. After that the subscription renews automatically, exactly like subscriptions bought in the webshop.
Before you start
- The subscription product must exist and be set up as a subscription. See Subscription plans.
- Starting subscriptions at the till must be switched on: «Innstillinger» (Settings) → «Tjenester» (Services) → «Abonnement» (Subscription), tab «Kasse (POS)», switch «Tillat oppstart av abonnement i kassen» (Allow starting subscriptions at the till). When it is off, the till shows no subscription button.
- Under «Tillatte oppstartsmetoder» (Allowed start methods) you choose which buttons the till shows: «På terminal (signatur på kortleser)» (On the terminal – signature on the card reader) and/or «QR- eller SMS-lenke (kunden fullfører selv)» (QR or SMS link – the customer completes it).
- SMS links, one-time codes and welcome texts require SMS to be switched on under «Innstillinger» → «Bedrift» (Company) → «Varslinger» (Notifications), tab «SMS».
How to do it
- Tap «Mer» (More) and choose «Start abonnement» (Start subscription) in the «Flere handlinger» (More actions) menu.
- Pick the subscription product. If it has several variants, pick one. Fill in any extra fields (fields marked * are required) and tap «Fortsett» (Continue).
- Choose the customer:
- If a customer is already on the sale, they are selected for you, and you can correct name, phone, e-mail and address.
- Otherwise search by name, e-mail or phone, or tap «+ Ny kunde» (New customer) and enter name (required), e-mail, phone and address. An address is required if the subscription is shipped to the customer.
- Check the customer details and choose how the customer confirms:
- «På terminal (signatur)» – the customer confirms the subscription and signs on the card reader, and the card is saved.
- «Send lenke på SMS» (Send link by SMS) – the customer gets a link and completes on their own phone.
- «Vis QR-kode» (Show QR code) – the customer scans the code on screen and completes on their own phone.
- On the terminal: Watch the screen. The till shows «Venter på samtykke på terminalen …» (Waiting for consent), then «Venter på signatur på terminalen …» (Waiting for signature) and, if needed, «Venter på kortbetaling …» (Waiting for card payment). When everything is approved you see «Abonnementet er aktivt!» (The subscription is active!).
- Link or QR: Once the link is sent or the QR code shown, tap «Ferdig» (Done). You do not have to wait – the subscription becomes active when the customer has finished on their phone.

When the shop requires an SMS code
If «Krev SMS-engangskode ved oppstart på terminal» (Require SMS one-time code when starting on the terminal) is on, the till first sends a 4-digit code to the customer's phone. Ask the customer to read it out, type it on the on-screen keypad and tap «Bekreft og fortsett» (Confirm and continue). If the code does not arrive, tap «Send ny kode» (Send new code). The customer needs a phone number for this.
Good to know
- Not on Kontantkunde. A subscription is always tied to a registered customer, never to the walk-in customer Kontantkunde.
- First payment. With «Belast første periode i kassen» (Charge the first period at the till) on, the customer pays the first period on the terminal right away and the card is saved for renewals. With it off, only the card is saved and the first charge happens at the first renewal. Trial periods are never charged at start.
- The receipt for a subscription started on the terminal states that it renews automatically, with interval, amount and next charge, plus the signature when one was taken.
- Link and QR are completed as an online purchase using the payment methods enabled for the webshop. The receipt is then e-mailed, not printed at the till. The link has a limited lifetime, and the shop can send automatic SMS reminders if the customer does not finish.
- Cancelling. Tap «Avbryt på terminalen» (Cancel on the terminal) if the reader hangs. Closing the dialog while the till is waiting for the terminal also cancels the request on the reader.
- New customers get an account. If the customer has no account, Cmerce creates one. The customer receives a welcome SMS and/or e-mail with login details if the shop has switched that on.
Managing the subscription from the till
Open the customer in the customer panel. Under «Abonnementer» (Subscriptions) you see the customer's active subscriptions and can:
- «Pause» and «Gjenoppta» (Resume) – only if the shop allows pausing,
- «Si opp» (Cancel) – choose «Si opp ved periodeslutt» (Cancel at end of period) or «Avslutt umiddelbart» (End immediately),
- «Angre oppsigelse» (Undo cancellation) for a subscription that has been cancelled but has not ended yet.
Ended subscriptions are listed under «Tidligere abonnementer» (Previous subscriptions).
To change a subscription you need the permission «Endre kundens abonnement i kassen (pause, gjenoppta, si opp)» (Change the customer's subscription at the till – pause, resume, cancel).
The web till and the till app
The till app (Kasse-appen) on Android has the same start options: terminal, SMS link and QR code. With a link or QR code you can move on to the next customer while this one finishes on their own phone.
Frequently asked questions
The customer never completed the link. What happens?
The link expires after the time the shop has chosen. If the customer never finishes, the started subscription is deleted automatically after the number of days set under «Slett uferdig oppstart etter (dager)» (Delete unfinished start after – days).
Can I see whether the phone number was verified?
Yes. When the SMS code was used at start, this is shown on the subscription in the back office.
