Subscription plans

How to turn a product into a subscription – with interval, trial period, commitment period and delivery – and what happens to running subscriptions when you change the price.

In Cmerce, a subscription plan is an ordinary product with «Abonnementsprodukt» (Subscription product) switched on. The customer buys the product once and is then charged automatically at a fixed interval, for example every month. You can sell the subscription in the webshop and at the till.

Before you start

  • At least one payment method must be available for «Abonnementer» (Subscriptions) under «Innstillinger» (Settings) → «Salg og betaling» (Sales and payment) → «Betalingsmetoder» (Payment methods). See Payment methods – overview and setup.
  • If the subscription is delivered physically, you must have shipping or pickup switched on under «Innstillinger» (Settings) → «Nettbutikk» (Webshop) → «Levering» (Delivery).
  • You need permission to edit products.

How to do it

  1. Go to «Katalog» (Catalogue) → «Produkter» (Products) and open the product, or create a new one.
  2. Open the «Abonnement» (Subscription) section and switch on «Abonnementsprodukt».
  3. Choose the «Leveringsintervall» (Billing interval), for example «Månedlig» (Monthly) or «Kvartalsvis» (Quarterly). Only intervals the payment providers support can be chosen: daily, weekly, every 10 days, every 2 weeks, monthly, every other month, quarterly, every 4 months, half-yearly and yearly.
  4. Fill in the rest as needed:
    • «Prøveperiode (dager)» (Trial period, days) – free days before the first payment. 0 means no trial.
    • «Fysisk levering» (Physical delivery) – switch off for digital subscriptions such as memberships or access.
    • «Maks per kunde» (Max per customer) – how many active subscriptions one customer can have. Empty means unlimited.
    • «Bindingstid (måneder)» (Commitment period, months) – the minimum time before the customer can cancel. 0 means no commitment.
    • «Når bindingstiden er over» (When the commitment period ends) – shown once you set a commitment period. Choose whether the subscription continues until the customer cancels, or stops automatically.
  5. Set the price on the variant under the «Varianter» (Variants) tab, as for other products. The price applies per period.
  6. Save the product.

The «Abonnement» (Subscription) section of the product form

When you switch on «Abonnementsprodukt», «Auto-belast» (Auto-capture) and «Auto-fullfør» (Auto-fulfil) are switched on for the product as well, so each renewal is charged and completed by itself.

Changing the price of a subscription

A subscription's price is frozen when the customer signs up. If you change the variant's price, Cmerce asks what should happen to existing subscribers («Eksisterende abonnementer», Existing subscriptions):

  • «La dem beholde prisen de har avtalt (anbefalt)» (Let them keep their agreed price – recommended)
  • «Oppdater kun de som står på den gamle prisen» (Update only those on the old price)
  • «Oppdater alle løpende abonnementer til ny pris» (Update all running subscriptions to the new price)

The change applies from the next renewal. You can also change the price of individual subscriptions, see Customer subscriptions.

Good to know

  • A subscription product cannot be bought as a one-off purchase.
  • The commitment period is at most 12 months. For digital services the limit is 6 months, under section 33 of the digitalytelsesloven (Digital Services Act). A cancellation during the commitment period takes effect when the commitment period ends.
  • Customer group for subscribers: When you save a subscription product, Cmerce automatically creates the customer group «Abonnement: product name». Customers with an active subscription are in the group, and are removed when the subscription is paused or ends. The group can be used for member prices and booking member benefits. It is marked «auto» in the product form.
  • Vipps Recurring does not support every interval. Use «Verifiser kompatibilitet» (Verify compatibility) on the Vipps Recurring card to check your products. See Vipps MobilePay.
  • If you switch off «Abonnementsprodukt», the subscription settings and the automatic customer group are removed.
  • If the product has «Fysisk levering» on but the shop has neither shipping nor pickup, you get a warning when you save. Customers cannot subscribe until you activate a delivery method.
