The cash drawer

In Cmerce the cash drawer is connected to the receipt printer (a Star printer) with a cable in the printer's drawer port. The printer opens the drawer – the till only sends the instruction. That is why the drawer behaves the same in the web till, in the till app in the browser and in the till app (Kasse-appen) on Android. Every opening is recorded in the electronic journal and counted on the X-rapport (mid-day report) and Z-rapport (end-of-day report).

Before you start

• The drawer must be connected to the drawer port (RJ11/RJ12) of a Star printer set up with CloudPRNT. Built-in printers, for example in an iMin or in the payment terminal, cannot open a drawer.
• The till must be set up with an integrated cash drawer. Go to «Kasse (POS)» → «Kasser» (Registers), open the till and switch on «Kassen har integrert kassaskuff» (The till has an integrated cash drawer) in the «Kassaskuff» (Cash drawer) section.
• If the drawer is connected to a different Star printer than the one printing receipts, choose it under «Skriver som åpner skuffen» (Printer that opens the drawer). Leave the field empty to use the till's own printer.

When does the drawer open?

The drawer opens automatically whenever cash actually goes in or out:

• on a cash sale, including when only part of the amount is paid in cash
• on a return where the money is paid back in cash

Card, Vipps, gift card, credit sale (invoice) and training sales do not open the drawer.

Open the drawer without a sale

1. Tap «Mer» (More) on the till. The «Flere handlinger» (More actions) menu opens.
2. Tap «Åpne skuff» (Open drawer) – «Uten salg» (No sale).
3. The till shows «Skuffen åpnes.» (The drawer is opening.) and the drawer pops open.

The button only appears when the till is set up with an integrated cash drawer and you have the permission «Åpne kassaskuffen uten salg» (Open the cash drawer without a sale). The owner decides who has it. An opening without a sale is also recorded in the journal and counted on the reports.

The till is blocked while the drawer is open

As long as the drawer is open, you cannot register anything on the till. If you try, you see the message «Kassaskuffen er åpen. Lukk kassaskuffen før du fortsetter.» (The cash drawer is open. Close the cash drawer before you continue.) Close the drawer and carry on.

The block covers all registrations – not just new sales:

• adding, changing or removing items
• discounts and coupons
• adding or removing the customer on the sale
• parking, resuming and cancelling sales
• starting a payment
• returns and handing over click-and-collect orders

These are not blocked:

• a card or Vipps payment that is already in progress – it completes
• the X-report, the Z-report and closing the till (you count the cash with the drawer open)
• printing and sending receipts
• booking check-in and editing customer details
• «Åpne skuff» itself

Good to know

• Every opening is counted – including openings without a sale, and openings the till did not ask for (the printer reports when the drawer opens). The figure appears as «Kassaskuffåpninger» (Drawer openings) in the on-screen X-report and as «Kassaskuff åpnet» (Drawer opened) on the printed reports – even when it is zero.
• The printer reports whether the drawer is open or closed. If the printer stops responding after the drawer was last reported open, the till stays blocked until the printer reports the drawer closed – but for at most 10 minutes. The message tells you the time the block lifts. Check that the printer is on and connected.
• Otherwise the printer never stops a sale. If the printer is disconnected while the drawer is closed, you can sell as normal. If the printer fails to open the drawer, the sale still goes through.
• A till without a drawer: if «Kassen har integrert kassaskuff» is off, the till is treated as exempt from the integrated-drawer requirement and nothing is blocked. Only switch it off for a till that really is exempt, for example one where notes and coins are not accepted. If you are unsure, contact your accountant or auditor.
• No switch for the block. There is no setting that turns off the block while the drawer is open.
• No pay-ins or pay-outs. The till has no function for recording cash deposits or withdrawals outside a sale. The «Innskudd» (Deposits) and «Uttak» (Withdrawals) lines on the X- and Z-reports therefore always show zero.

In short

• The Star printer opens the drawer, automatically when cash goes in or out, or with «Åpne skuff».
• Every opening is journalled and counted on the X- and Z-reports.
• While the drawer is open you cannot register anything – close it and carry on.
