Self-checkout – overview and setup

Let customers shop on their own and pay by card at the terminal, with their own phone or at a kiosk. How to switch it on, choose which products can be bought and set up the till.

With self-checkout (selvbetjening) customers shop without help from a member of staff. They pick products and pay by card on your payment terminal. There are two ways to do it:

  • Mobil (phone): the customer uses her own phone. She scans a QR code, adds products to a basket and pays at the terminal. Nothing in the shop needs a screen. The till is a "virtual till".
  • Kiosk: a screen in the shop (for example a tablet) that the customer uses herself, together with a terminal.

Both are completely ordinary till sales. They end up in the end-of-day report (Z-rapport), the electronic journal and SAF-T like every other till sale. Only card payments work. The customer gives only a mobile number, which is used to send the receipt.

Before you start

  • Cmerce must have switched the feature on for your shop. Contact us if you cannot see «Selvbetjening» under settings.
  • You need the permission «Konfigurere selvbetjening» (configure self-checkout).
  • You need a Surfboard payment terminal with a printer: either the terminal's built-in printer or a Star printer connected to the till. A till cannot be used for self-checkout without a printer, because the customer must be able to choose a paper receipt.
  • Self-checkout does not take cash. The cash drawer is switched off on self-checkout tills.

How to do it

  1. Go to «Innstillinger» (Settings) → «Kasse» (Till) → «Selvbetjening».
  2. Switch on «Aktiver selvbetjening» (Activate self-checkout). Then switch on «Mobil (kundens egen telefon)» and/or «Kiosk (butikkens skjerm)».
  3. Under «Varegrupper» (Product groups) choose the groups customers may buy from. Sub-groups are included. If the list is empty, nothing can be bought.
  4. Under «Unntatte produkter» (Excluded products) take out individual products that must not be bought, even if they sit in a chosen group.
  5. Optionally write a «Velkomsttekst» (welcome text) and a «Hjelpetekst» (help text), up to 280 characters each. Switch on «Vis ordrenummer» to show the pick-up number on the «Ferdig» (Done) screen.
  6. Press «Lagre» (Save).
  7. Go to «Kasse (POS)» → «Kasser» (Tills) and create or open the till that will be self-checkout. Under «Selvbetjening», set «Type kassepunkt» (till type) to «Selvbetjening» and choose «Grensesnitt» (interface): «Virtuell kasse – kunden bruker egen mobil» (virtual till, customer's own phone) or «Kiosk – butikkens skjerm» (kiosk, the shop's screen).
  8. Connect the till to the payment terminal and the printer. The form shows what is missing.
  9. Optional: «Reservasjonstid (sekunder)» (reservation time) controls how long a customer holds the till after pressing «Betal» (Pay). Leave it empty for the default (3 minutes).
  10. Download the sticker with «Last ned klistremerke (PDF)» and put it next to the terminal. Under «Innstillinger» → «Kasse» → «Selvbetjening» you will find «Last ned plakat (PDF)» (download poster). Hang the poster by the entrance. See Self-checkout with a phone.

You can use both in the same shop, on different tills. Each self-checkout till belongs to one terminal.

Good to know

  • One customer at a time per till and terminal. Another customer who tries is asked to wait and sees other free terminals at the same location.
  • The till opens and closes by itself. The first sale of the day opens it. After the day's cut-off time the till closes automatically and the Z-rapport is saved without being printed. A day without sales has no Z-rapport.
  • Returns are done at an ordinary, staffed till. The money goes back to the same payment method. See Returns and refunds.
  • No discounts, price changes or training mode on self-checkout tills.
  • Products that are not included: gift cards, subscriptions, punch cards, bookings, open-price items and products with their own extra fields are not sold in self-checkout.
  • Help: the customer can ask for help. A member of staff can cancel a purchase, print a copy of the receipt or resolve a stuck payment. See Tills and locations.
  • If a sticker has gone astray, use «Roter QR-kode» (Rotate QR code) on the till. Old stickers then stop working and you must print a new one (see Mobil).
