Taking payment: card on a terminal
How to take card payments – either on a payment terminal connected to the till, or on a standalone terminal where you record the card payment at the till.
Card payment works in two ways, depending on how the register is set up:
- Connected terminal: The till sends the amount to the payment terminal, and the sale is registered automatically once the terminal has approved the payment.
- Standalone terminal: You key the amount into the terminal yourself, and record the card payment at the till once the terminal has approved it.
The payment window shows which of the two applies to the till you are using.
Before you start
- For a connected terminal, the terminal must be set up and connected to the register. See Payment terminal from Surfboard.
With a connected terminal
- Tap «Betal» (Pay).
- Choose «Kort» (Card). Below it says «Betalingen startes på kortterminalen. Følg instruksjonene på skjermen.» (The payment starts on the card terminal. Follow the instructions on screen.)
- Tap «Start betaling» (Start payment).
- The «Kortbetaling» (Card payment) window shows the amount and what is happening on the terminal, for example «Vent på kort — tap, sett inn eller sveip» (Waiting for card – tap, insert or swipe), «Tast PIN på terminalen» (Enter PIN on the terminal) and «Autoriserer …» (Authorising …).
- When the payment is approved, the sale is registered and the receipt is shown.
If the terminal declines the card, you get the message «Kortbetalingen ble avvist. Prøv igjen eller velg en annen betalingsmåte.» (The card payment was declined. Try again or choose another payment method.) The items are still in the cart and nothing has been registered.
Cancelling a card payment
- Tap «Avbryt betaling» (Cancel payment) while you wait. The payment is cancelled on the terminal and you return to the payment window.
- If the terminal does not respond, «Terminalen svarer ikke. Du kan tvinge stopp og prøve igjen.» (The terminal is not responding. You can force stop and try again.) is shown. Tap «Tving stopp» (Force stop). If still nothing happens on the terminal, restart it.
The terminal is in use on another till
If several tills share one terminal, you may be told the terminal is busy. If you have access, «Ta over terminalen» (Take over the terminal) is shown. The till tells you which till and which amount will be interrupted, and you confirm with «Ta over og start betaling» (Take over and start payment). A payment that has already been approved can never be taken over.
With a standalone terminal
- Tap «Betal» and choose «Kort». Below it says «Kortbetaling registreres som betalt. Selve korttransaksjonen gjennomføres på en frittstående kortterminal.» (The card payment is recorded as paid. The card transaction itself is carried out on a standalone card terminal.)
- Key the amount shown under «Å betale» into the card terminal and let the customer pay.
- Wait until the terminal has approved the payment.
- Tap «Bekreft betaling» (Confirm payment) at the till.
Good to know
- The receipt for a card payment on a connected terminal shows the terminal's transaction reference.
- No parking during payment. «Parker salg» is hidden while a card payment is in progress, and the till app in the browser does not lock while you wait for the terminal.
- Remainder after a gift card: If the customer pays partly with a gift card, the rest can be paid by card. See Gift cards at the till.
- The Android till app: Choose «Kort» («Terminal hvis tilgjengelig, ellers manuelt» – terminal if available, otherwise manual). With a connected terminal a waiting screen with «Avbryt» (Cancel) is shown, and on an error you can choose «Prøv igjen» (Try again).
Frequently asked questions
The customer was charged, but the till showed an error.
Do not register the sale again before you have checked. Look under «Mer» → «Historikk» (History) to see whether the sale already exists. Then check the terminal's transaction list. See Troubleshooting the till.
Can I take a card without a terminal?
A card payment must always be carried out on a payment terminal. Without a connected terminal you only record the card payment at the till after it has been approved on a standalone terminal.
