Connect the reports to an AI assistant (MCP)
With MCP, your AI assistant – Claude, for example – can read your shop's reports using a dedicated access key that only grants read access. The feature must be switched on by Cmerce.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that lets an AI assistant fetch data from other systems. With MCP, you or your accountant can ask an AI assistant such as Claude about your shop's figures – for example "How did sales in September compare with last year?" – and the assistant fetches the answer from your reports.
The access is read-only. Nothing can be changed through MCP.
Before you start
- MCP must be switched on for your shop by Cmerce. If it is not, the page shows «Ikke aktivert» (Not enabled) with the text «Rapporter via MCP er ikke slått på for butikken din.» Contact Cmerce to have it enabled.
- You need the permission «Opprette API-tilgang for rapporter (MCP)» (Create API access for reports). The Eier (Owner), Administrator and Regnskapsfører (Accountant) roles have it by default.
- You need an AI client that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP with a custom
Authorizationheader, for example Claude Code.
How to do it
1. Create an access key
- Go to «Integrasjoner» (Integrations) → «API-tilgang for rapporter» (API access for reports).
- Click «Opprett tilgangsnøkkel» (Create access key).
- Give the key a «Navn» (Name) you will recognise, for example «Claude – regnskapsfører».
- Choose how long it is «Gyldig i» (Valid for): 30, 90, 180 or 365 days.
- Click «Opprett» (Create).
- Click «Kopier» (Copy) and store the key somewhere safe. Click «Ferdig» (Done).
2. Connect the AI client
Under «Slik kobler du til» (How to connect) you find the address of your shop's MCP server. Give your AI client the address, and the key as an Authorization: Bearer header. In Claude Code it looks like this (replace the address and key with your own):
claude mcp add --transport http cmerce-rapporter https://minbutikk.cmerce.no/mcp/v1/reports --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR-KEY"
Other clients have their own settings for this. See the documentation for the client you use.
What the AI assistant can access
- the reports you yourself have access to, with period, filters and comparison
- the key figures from the reports overview
- order headers and order lines (requires access to orders)
- Z-reports (requires access to POS reports)
- product search by name and SKU
All figures are informational. The exception is the Z-report, which is returned as it was signed and is the authoritative end-of-day record for the till.
What it never gets
- customer names, emails, phone numbers or addresses – customers appear only as an anonymous ID
- who worked at the till, or figures per employee
- gift card codes, discount codes, card data or payment references
- passwords, keys and other secrets
- signatures and contents of the electronic journal
- data from other shops
The customer reports and the «Operatører» (Operators) report are not available over MCP.
Good to know
- The key has your permissions – never more. It acts as the user who created it. If that user loses access, the key stops working immediately.
- Revoke a key with «Tilbakekall» (Revoke) in the table. The next attempt is rejected.
- Overview: The table shows «Navn» (Name), «Eier» (Owner), «Opprettet» (Created), «Sist brukt» (Last used) and «Utløper» (Expires) for each key.
- Limits: 60 calls per minute per key and 2,000 calls per day for the shop.
- Logging: Every call is recorded in the audit trail (kontrollspor) with which report and period were fetched – but never the figures returned.
- Not the same as AI insights. MCP is your own AI assistant fetching figures. AI insights is a commentary on the reports overview. See AI insights.
Frequently asked questions
Can my accountant use their own AI assistant?
Yes. A user with the Regnskapsfører role can create their own key. The assistant then sees what the accountant has access to.
The AI assistant gives wrong figures – what now?
An AI assistant can misunderstand or miscalculate. Check important figures in the reports, and always use the Z-report for the till's authoritative figures.
