Credit sales and payments under the law
A sale on invoice is not a cash sale. Here is what the law requires when the till is used for credit sales, why the customer gets a delivery receipt, and why the invoice is not paid at the till.
With a kredittsalg (credit sale) the customer gets the goods now and pays later against an invoice. This is practical for business customers and regulars – but it is not a cash sale, and the law treats it differently. The customer gets a different receipt, the sale is shown separately on the reports, and the invoice is the sales document. How to sell on invoice at the till is described in Credit sales and invoices at the till.
A credit sale is not a cash sale
If you register credit sales at the till, special requirements still apply – to the receipt and to the reports.
A delivery receipt, not a sales receipt
How Cmerce does it:
- A credit sale always produces a delivery receipt – never a sales receipt.
- The marking is exactly the wording of the Regulations, in enlarged text.
- Delivery receipts have their own number series per register, alongside the ordinary transaction number.
- The receipt shows the goods delivered but has no payment line. Instead it states that the sale has been invoiced, with the due date.
- The invoice is created and sent by your accounting system. The invoice is the sales documentation.
Credit sales on the X- and Z-reports
How Cmerce does it: Credit sales are kept out of all cash sale figures – total cash sales, payment methods, the VAT breakdown, the number of sales receipts and the grand total. Instead, the report has a separate «Kredittsalg» (Credit sales) block with:
| Line | Shows |
|---|---|
| Kredittsalg (Credit sales) | Count and amount |
| Utleveringskvitteringer (Delivery receipts) | Count and amount |
| Retur på kredittsalg (Returns of credit sales) | Count and amount |
The lines appear on the report on days when you have not sold on credit too – then at zero.
Why the invoice is not paid at the till
The law also mentions payments relating to credit sales. In Cmerce there is no function for taking payment for an invoice at the till. The customer pays the invoice to the bank account shown on it, and the payment is recorded in the accounting system. Cmerce reads the payment back automatically, so the customer's credit limit is freed up.
Because the till never takes such payments, no payment receipts are ever printed, and there are no credit payments to report.
Returning a credit sale
If the customer returns goods from a credit sale, no money leaves the till. The customer gets a return receipt, and the accounting system gets a credit note. The return appears under «Retur på kredittsalg» on the reports.
What you must do yourself
- Credit sales must be switched on by Cmerce for your shop, and you need a connected accounting system with invoicing. See Invoicing and credit sales.
- Follow up the invoices in the accounting system: payments, reminders and debt collection happen there.
- Keep the customer register correct, with invoice address and, where relevant, organisation number. The walk-in customer (Kontantkunde) can never buy on invoice.
- How credit sales should be booked in your case is something to agree with your accountant or auditor.
In short
- A credit sale is not a cash sale.
- The customer gets a delivery receipt marked «IKKJE KVITTERING FOR KJØP», in its own number series.
- Credit sales are kept out of the cash sale figures and specified separately on the X- and Z-reports, including zeros.
- The invoice is paid through the bank and recorded in the accounting system – never at the till.
