Moving from another system

How to move a WooCommerce shop to Cmerce – customers, items, orders, subscriptions, bookings, memberships and gift cards – with a review before anything is imported and safe activation of renewals.

If you are moving from WooCommerce, you can bring your shop with you without entering everything again. You export the database from WooCommerce, upload it to Cmerce, review what should be imported, and confirm. The import runs in the background, and you get emails along the way.

Before you start

  • Only the owner of the shop can import.
  • You need access to the control panel of the web host where the WooCommerce shop is hosted, with phpMyAdmin.
  • If subscriptions are to continue with the same payment agreements, Vipps and possibly Stripe should be set up in Cmerce before you start. See Payment methods.

How to do it

1. Export the database from WooCommerce

  1. Log in to your web host's control panel and open phpMyAdmin.
  2. Select the database of the WooCommerce shop.
  3. Click the «Export» tab.
  4. Choose the «Custom» export method and select all tables.
  5. Under «Compression», choose gzip – it makes the file about ten times smaller.
  6. Check that the format is SQL, and click «Export». You get a file ending in .sql or .sql.gz.

2. Upload the file

  1. In Cmerce, go to «Importer» (Import) → «Oversikt» (Overview).
  2. Under «Ny import» (New import), choose the source «WooCommerce (SQL-dump)».
  3. Choose the file and click «Start opplasting» (Start upload). Large files are uploaded in chunks, so you can follow the progress.
  4. Cmerce reads and analyses the file. You see the status under «Tidligere importer» (Previous imports), and you get the email «Importanalysen er klar» (The import analysis is ready) when you can continue.

3. Review the import

Open the import to get to «Gjennomgang av import» (Import review). Go through the steps:

  1. Entiteter (Entities): Choose what to import: customers, products, coupons, orders, subscriptions, bookings, memberships and gift cards. With «Importer ordrer fra og med» (Import orders from) you can skip old orders.
  2. Produkter (Products): For each item, choose «Opprett nytt produkt» (Create new product) or an item that already exists in Cmerce. See Importing products.
  3. Abonnement (Subscriptions): Link the subscription products and choose the «Fornyelsesintervall» (Renewal interval). Under «Abonnementer betalt med Klarna» (Subscriptions paid with Klarna), choose whether to import them without a payment method (the customer must add a new payment method at the next renewal) or skip them.
  4. Booking: Link booking products to your services in Cmerce.
  5. Medlemskap (Memberships): Link each membership plan to a customer group, or choose «Opprett ny kundegruppe» (Create new customer group).
  6. Kunder (Customers): Choose «Duplikathåndtering» (Duplicate handling) – merge with existing customers by email (recommended) or always create new ones.
  7. Gavekort (Gift cards): Choose whether to import outstanding gift cards.
  8. Oppsummering (Summary): Review «Dette blir opprettet» (This will be created) and the result of the «Tilkoblingssjekk» (Connection check). Click «Bekreft import» (Confirm import).

The import runs in the background. You get the email «Importen er fullført» (The import is complete) when it is done, and a summary is shown under «Tidligere importer».

4. Activate renewals

Imported subscriptions do not renew until you activate them. Only do this once the old shop has stopped renewing.

  1. Switch off renewals in WooCommerce.
  2. In Cmerce, go to «Importer» → «Aktiver fornyelser» (Activate renewals).
  3. Click «Kjør tilkoblingssjekk» (Run connection check) to check that the payment agreements from WooCommerce can be used.
  4. Tick «Jeg bekrefter at fornyelser er deaktivert i den gamle butikken (WooCommerce).» (I confirm that renewals are disabled in the old shop.)
  5. Click «Aktiver fornyelser».

Good to know

  • Passwords cannot be transferred from WooCommerce. Customers reset their password with «Glemt passord» (Forgot password) the first time, or sign in with another login method you have switched on, such as Vipps or Google.
  • Historical orders are imported as webshop orders with the prices the customer paid. They do not affect the till or its electronic journal.
  • New import at switch-over: You can upload a new export just before you switch. Anything already imported is updated rather than created again, so only new customers, orders and changes come across.
  • The file is deleted automatically seven days after the import has completed or failed. The import then gets the status «Slettet» (Deleted). The imported data stays.
  • Security: The export file contains customer data and is stored privately. Only the owner has access to the import pages.
  • Shopify: If you use Shopify and want to keep using it, connect Shopify instead. See Shopify.

Frequently asked questions

The import says «Feilet» (Failed). What do I do?

Check that the file is a complete SQL export with all tables. Upload the file again. If you get the same error, contact Cmerce.

Are customers notified when they are imported?
