How to use a barcode scanner with the till, connect the NETUM M9 by USB receiver, Bluetooth or cable, and set the keyboard language with programming codes.

With a barcode scanner you add items to the basket by scanning them. The till works with ordinary USB and Bluetooth scanners, both in the web till and in the till app (Kasse-appen). You can also scan with the device's camera.

Before you start

  • The products need a barcode or an item number (SKU). The barcode goes in the «Strekkode (EAN/GTIN)» (Barcode) field on the variant. See Barcodes (EAN/GTIN).
  • The product must be published and available at the till.

How scanning works

A barcode scanner behaves like a keyboard: it "types" the code very quickly and finishes with Enter. The till tells a scan apart from normal typing by how fast the characters arrive.

  • A scan puts the item straight into the basket.
  • Normal typing in the search box is only a search. What you type by hand is never added directly to the basket.

In the web till you can scan with the cursor in the search box, or after tapping anywhere else on the till screen.

The till looks up the code in this order: barcode first, then item number (SKU). You can also scan the QR code on a receipt (for a return or a copy) and the QR code on a booking.

Most problems come from the scanner's set-up. Use the programming barcodes in the scanner's manual:

SettingRecommended
Keyboard layoutNorwegian
SuffixEnter (CR) or Tab
PrefixNone
Inter-character delayNone (default)
Bluetooth modeHID keyboard (not serial/SPP)

Set up the scanner we supply (NETUM M9)

The scanner we supply is the NETUM M9. If you have a different scanner, follow its manual and use the settings in the table above.

Setting it up takes a couple of minutes. You only do it once.

How to scan the codes here

  1. Hold the scanner 10–20 cm from the code. If you scan from the screen, turn the brightness up.
  2. Press the button on the scanner.
  3. Wait for three tones. The scanner has then saved the setting.

Scan the codes in order, one at a time. It does no harm to scan a code twice.

Choose your set-up

A PC or tablet with a USB portSet-up A: USB plug (recommended)
An iPad, or a tablet or phone without a free USB portSet-up B: Bluetooth

If something does not work

Find the problem that fits, and scan the code below it.

The code appears in the search box, but the item is not added to the basket. Scan this:

Programming code: Enter after each scan

If that does not help, scan this instead:

Programming code: Tab after each scan

Nothing happens when you scan with the USB plug. Scan this, then do Set-up A again:

Programming code: USB plug as keyboard

The scanner beeps when you scan an item, but nothing comes through. The scanner may be storing the codes instead of sending them. Scan this:

Programming code: Normal mode

Digits are missing on an Android phone or tablet. Scan this:

Programming code: Show digits correctly (Num Lock off)

Wrong characters on an iPad or Mac, for example when you scan the QR code on a receipt. Scan this. Then go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Hardware Keyboard on the iPad and choose "U.S.".

Programming code: US keyboard

The cable does not work. Scan these two:

Programming code: Cable as keyboard

Programming code: Switch between cable and wireless

You want to use the Bluetooth scanner with another tablet. Scan this, and remove the scanner from the Bluetooth list on the old tablet. Then do Set-up B again.

Programming code: Forget old Bluetooth connections

Nothing helps. Scan this. All settings on the scanner are erased. Then start again with the set-up you chose.

Programming code: Reset everything

Sound

Scan the one you want.

Programming code: Sound off

Programming code: Low volume

Programming code: Medium volume

Programming code: High volume

Sleep

The scanner sleeps after 3 minutes without use to save battery. Press the button to wake it. A Bluetooth scanner needs a moment to reconnect. If the first scan after a break gets lost, let it wait longer before it sleeps.

Programming code: Sleep after 3 minutes

Programming code: Sleep after 30 minutes

Programming code: Sleep after 1 hour

Only use "Never sleep" when the scanner is on the cable. Otherwise the battery runs down quickly.

Programming code: Never sleep

Scanning with the camera

  • Web till: press the camera button by the search box. The scanner opens over the basket.
  • Till app: tap the camera icon in the search box and point the camera at the item's barcode.

When the item is not found

If the till cannot find the code, a message is shown for two seconds:

  • «Fant ikke varen» (Item not found) – no product has this barcode or item number.
  • «Varen finnes, men er ikke tilgjengelig i kassen» (The item exists but is not available at the till) – for example, the product is not published or not available at the till.

Press «Lukk» (Close) to dismiss the message straight away.

Troubleshooting

Diagnostic panel in the web till

The web till has a built-in panel that shows how scans arrive. Add ?scandebug=1 to the end of the till's address, for example …/kassesystem/…?scandebug=1. A small black panel appears at the bottom left. Turn it off again with ?scandebug=0.

The panel shows scanned codes on screen. Turn it off if customers can see the screen. The till app does not have this panel – open the web till on the same device to test the scanner.
