Opening the till and starting the day

How to open a shift on a register with an opening float, and what happens if yesterday's end-of-day report has not been run.

Before you can register sales, the register must have an open shift. When you open the shift, you enter how much float (veksel) is in the drawer. That amount is the starting point when the cash is counted at the end of the day.

Before you start

  • You are signed in to the till. See Signing in to the till.
  • The shop must have its organisation number and shop name registered under «Innstillinger» → «Butikkprofil» → «Firmaopplysninger» (Settings → Shop profile → Company details). Without them the till cannot be opened, because they must appear on every receipt.
  • In the till app (Kasse-appen) on Android you need the permission «Åpne og lukke kasseskift» (Open and close till shifts). Without it you see the message «Kassen er ikke åpnet» (The till is not open) and must ask a colleague with access to open it.

How to do it

In the web till and the till app in the browser

  1. Choose the register. If it has no open shift, the «Åpne skift» (Open shift) screen is shown with the register's name and register ID (kassapunkt-ID).
  2. Count the float in the cash drawer.
  3. Enter the amount in the «Veksel i kassen» (Float in the till) field, in kroner. The field may be prefilled with the shop's default float – correct it if it does not match.
  4. Tap «Åpne skift».

The shift is now active and the sales screen is shown. «Aktiv» appears at the top.

In the Android till app

  1. Tap «Åpne kasse» (Open till).
  2. Enter the float on the «Åpningsbeløp» (Opening amount) keypad.
  3. Confirm. The sales screen is shown.

Good to know

  • One shift per register. If the shift is already open (for example by a colleague), you go straight to the sales screen. You do not need to open it again.
  • The float affects the cash count. Expected cash at the end of the day is the float plus cash sales and cash rounding, minus cash refunds.
  • Default float is set per register under «Kasse (POS)» → «Kasser» → choose the register → «Standard veksel ved åpning» (Default float on opening).
  • Cannot open? The till shows what is missing, for example «Organisasjonsnummer mangler» (organisation number missing) or «Butikknavn mangler» (shop name missing). Fix it in the settings and try again. If it says the system is missing a signing key, contact Cmerce.

When yesterday's end-of-day report is missing

Every sales day must be closed with an end-of-day report (dagsoppgjør / Z-rapport). If you forget, the till reminds you:

  • Reminder: From a time in the night after the sales day (02:00 by default), a yellow bar shows «Dagsoppgjør mangler» (End of day missing). You can still sell. Tap «Kjør dagsoppgjør» (Run end of day) to close the day.
  • Block: From a later time (04:00 by default), «Kassen er sperret for nye salg» (The till is blocked for new sales) is shown. A sale already started can be completed as normal, but you cannot start new sales until you tap «Kjør dagsoppgjør (Z-rapport)».
  • E-mail: From 06:00 (by default) the shop's administrators receive one e-mail saying the end of day is missing.
  • Automatic close: If the end of day is still not run, the shift is closed automatically as a last resort 24 hours after that e-mail. The time is shown on the block screen. Started and parked sales are cancelled first, and the cash is not counted – the Z-report shows «Ingen – automatisk lukket (ikke opptalt)» (None – closed automatically, not counted).

The reminder and block times can be changed per register under «Kasse (POS)» → «Kasser» with the fields «Påminnelse om dagsoppgjør» (End-of-day reminder) and «Sperr nye salg fra» (Block new sales from).

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to open the till every time I sign in?

No. The shift belongs to the register, not to you. As long as the shift is open, you just sign in and carry on.

I entered the wrong float. Can I correct it?

The float cannot be changed after the shift is opened. Count the drawer carefully at the end of the day – the difference is shown there. Contact your accountant if you are unsure how the difference should be booked.
